MY STORY
Hi, I’m Michael Ewing.
I’m an only child raised by a single mother. My mom did the best she could, but there’s no substitute for a father in a boy’s life. His absence stunted my growth as a young man in many ways, and it wasn’t until I got back in touch with him at age 12 that things started to shift for me. My dad was in no way a model for fatherhood and positive masculinity, but he did teach me many beautiful things and greatly contributed to the man I am today.
He passed away in 2020 and his absence yet again had a profound impact on me. For a couple of years I was lost and devoid of joy, but thankfully over the past few years with the help of my partner, therapist, and many, many books I have rediscovered joy, love and meaning.
One major insight over this journey has been that men today are in a “crisis of masculinity” and more lonely than ever (that was me!). I know too many men who only talk about anything of substance with their wives or partners. Many of them feel like they don’t really have a male friend to call or count on in tough times. It’s time for us to step up and be there for each other - for the benefit of men, the people we love, and society as a whole.
Much of my personal growth over the past few years has come from incredible support, but it’s also come from spending time in nature. Whether it’s a weeklong camping trip or a two-mile hike near LA, I always feel better after putting my phone away and returning to nature.
It’s my mission to help men return to (their) nature through intellectual and emotional support, pushing their physical boundaries, and facilitating deep connections. All in the great outdoors.
